Sarcomas

Sarcomas are rare malignant tumours that affect the bones and soft tissues of the body, including muscles, blood vessels, fat, and nerves. Despite their rarity, these tumours require precise diagnosis and specialised treatment due to their complex behaviour and the wide range of subtypes.

Diagnosis is based on imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which help to assess the tumour’s location and extent. Confirmation of the cellular type is carried out through a biopsy, which is essential in defining the most appropriate therapeutic plan.

These tumours can occur at any age. Bone sarcomas are more commonly seen in children, adolescents, and older adults, while soft tissue sarcomas are more prevalent in adults. At HPA, assessment includes a thorough analysis of risk factors, such as a history of radiation exposure or genetic conditions.

Sarcomas may remain asymptomatic for some time, making early detection more difficult. It is therefore important to be alert to signs such as persistent bone pain, swellings or rapidly growing lumps, and restricted movement — all of which should be assessed promptly.

Treatment is coordinated by a multidisciplinary team comprising specialised surgeons, oncologists, radiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals. Complete surgical removal of the tumour is often the first-line treatment, complemented by radiotherapy or chemotherapy where indicated, depending on the specific characteristics of each case.

Following treatment, regular follow-up is essential to monitor clinical progress and prevent recurrence. At the Grupo HPA Saúde, each patient benefits from a personalised surveillance plan and continuous support from the medical team.
